Modern Family is featured in the latest issue of US Weekly in the New on DVD section, and Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell give a short interview about the new season.

Julie Bowen is nervous. Now that Modern Family has won an Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, the expectations for season 2 are high. “Critics will say, ‘It sucks! Sophomore slump!” she laughs. But from what Bowen, 41, and costar Ty Burrell, 43, reveal to Us about the new season, fans won’t be disappointed.

Do you get recognized more often now?
JB Ty will get mobbed, and I’ll be standing right next to him and they walk right by me. I get told, “You look like that woman on Modern Family.”

What’s coming up this season?
JB In one episode, there’s an earthquake – and Claire is worried that she’s a bad mother, as usual.
TB And Phil didn’t earthquake-proof something. Nathan Lane guest-stars. I watched some of his scenes, and they’re hilarious.

Do you think Claire and Phil will have more kids?
JB She may, but I won’t. I’m done! If Claire gets pregnant, I’ll be wearing a foam belly.

How’s parenthood?
TB It’s amazing. Frances is 7 months old. She isn’t crawling yet, but she seems to get where she wants by rolling over. I’m still doused in spit-up.
JB Work and family – it’s really hard to do the balancing thing!

Ever bring your kids to the set?
JB Usually not. [Oliver, and twins John and Gus, 16 months] are so disruptive! They don’t understand quiet and cut and action. They just want to scream.

First Look at Cam’s Mom!

TV Guide gives us an exclusive first look at Cameron’s mom played by character actress Celia Weston. When Barb Tucker drops in for a visit later this fall, we’ll see she “is totally accepting and loving of Cameron and Mitchell,” reveals Celia. “Maybe a little too loving.”

She’s somebody who made him the person he is,” notes Eric. “When she comes to the door, she gives me her little puppy kisses. And we find out she called him her ‘Little Bomber,’ which was actually what my [real-life] grandma called me as a little kid — I think because I was a little gassy.”

Watch for Barb to bring Cam’s old yearbook and thank her son for a generous gift certificate, which Celia suspects Barb used to splurge on the Jaclyn Smith for Kmart collection. “She’s definitely all done up to come see her boy.”

Rolling Stone’s “The Hot Mama”

There are hot TV moms, there are inappropriately hot TV moms, and there are just plain dangerously hot TV moms. Then there’s  Sofia Vergara, from ABC’s Modern family, who may well qualify as America’s second-favorite Colombian import. Vergara plays Gloria, a smoldering bombshell with a preteen son, a barely comprehensible accent and an older husband played by none other than sitcom icon Ed O’Neill, from Married With Children. “When I was a little girl in Colombia, I grew up watching the Bundys“, Vergara says. “But I never thought I would grow up and marry Al Bundy“.

Gloria’s sharp wit is the key to the show. Unlike the other characters on Modern Family, she never gets jaded about being stuck in suburbia, because she’s constantly bemused by all the strange customs she sees around her. Her American family doesn’t know what to make of her, with her high heels, fierce temper and brash manners. But she takes no crap from them, telling her husband, “You’re so funny – I’m going to share that with my next husband while we’re spending all your money”.

Gloria has so many layers“, Vergara says. “She’s very strong, she’s very caring, she’s very sexual, she’s passionate about everything she does. She’s the stereotype of a Latin woman – in a good way“.

Vergara, 38, grew up in the seaside city of Barranquilla, the same hometown as Shakira, and first turned heads as a teen model in a TV soda ad. In the classic tradition of Latin show business, she was discovered on the beach while wearing a G-string. “I was 17“, she says. “They asked me, ‘Would you do a TV commercial?’ So I became really famous all over Latin America. But I was still going to Catholic school with all the nuns. I still thought I was going to become a dentist“.

Even after moving to America and hiring a speech coach, Vergara retains her strong Colombian accent – much to the consternation of her own teenage son. “He’s always teasing me about it“, she says. “He tells me, ‘Mama, you’ve been here 16 years but your accent is getting worse’. So I was very happy when I got nominated for the Emmy, because I wanted to rub it in his face: ‘See? People understand me with this accent!

Nylon’s Interview with Sarah Hyland

‘OhmygodIloveyou!’ shouts a passing fortysomething man, halfway through our interview with Sarah Hyland, who plays the ditzy Haley Dunphy on Modern Family. It’s something she has become quite used to hearing, and middle-aged men are not alone in their obsession – the mockumentary about a dysfunctional extended family has struck a chord with viewers of all ages. That could be because there’s a weirdo character for everyone, from the blunt patriarch (played by Ed O’Neil) to the boy-obsessed Haley. “The family is really chaotic and hectic and Haley never really knows what’s going on”, says Hyland, whose Kewpie doll eyes seem to take up half her face. “Although she thinks that she is completely different from her family, she really is like everybody else”. And if you think the show is funny, just imagine what it’s like on set. Admits Hyland, “It’s like watching a stand-up comic routine daily, all day, in between takes. It’s like, Oh, I get to have a blast and roll my eyes all day long!”

How would you describe Haley?
She’s your stereotypical teenager who likes to text all the time and loves boys and make-up and fashion and everything like that. She’s not the sharpest tool in the shed.

How would Haley describe the show?
She would probably hate it. She’d watch something more like Gossip Girl – if there are hot guys and sex and stuff, she would like it.

What was the audition process like?
At first they didn’t want to see me because I was 18 at the time. They were like, “She’s 18? She can’t play 15, we can’t see her”. My agent was like, “Um, trust me, she does not look 18″.

Why should people tune in to Modern Family?
Because I don’t know what’s coming, and I want to know. Don’t you?

Jesse Tyler and Ty Tease Upcoming Scenes

TV Guide asked Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell to tease the upcoming season’s scenes they’re most anxious for us to see. Read below!

Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell): We did a great scene with Nathan Lane. If that’s not gay enough already, we’re all wearing Oscar Wilde outfits in the scene. You know, general 18th Century garb. He’s playing our old flamboyant friend Pepper who is throwing his Oscar Wilde and Crazy brunch. He was so good. It turns out he was really trying to get on the show. He loves it and was even quoting obscure lines from past episodes.

Ty Burrell (Phil):I have another encounter with the steps in our house, which was very fun to revisit. In the finale we made an attempt to fix them, and we’re going to readdress that.”

Q&A: Jesse Tyler Ferguson Talks About His First Emmy Nomination

Vanity Fair caught up with Broadway-alum Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell Pritchett, to hear about the joys of that first nomination and get his pick for best comedic Actor in 2011.

First, congratulations. This is your first Emmy nomination, huh?
Actually, it’s my first time “being nominated” for anything. It’s really exciting.

How did you find out?
I was in New York doing Shakespeare in the Park, so my hours were really nutty. I was doing this three-hour Shakespeare play the night before and then hanging out with my cast afterward. I normally wouldn’t wake up until 11:00, but I got a phone call around 8:45 from my publicist. At first, she just told me that the show was nominated and I was thrilled. Then, we sort of had a discussion where I told her I wasn’t really expecting a nomination, and she said, “Well, I want you available for interviews if you do get nominated.” And I was like, “O.K., once again I’m not going to be nominated, but that’s sweet that you think I will.” Then she called back and said I got a nomination. I really thought she was pulling my leg.

More Scoop on Season Two

Categories: Interview, News

We keep getting more scoop on season 2! Here is what we should expect from Alex and Haley, Phil, Cameron and Lily:

Alex (Ariel Winter) is getting several storylines this year. Ariel says, “Alex gets a little friend who probably will develop into something more. Alex is turning into a teenager and maybe more of the popular girl. She’ll still be the know-it-all, the smart aleck, but she’s just going to be a little popular.” Ooh, and what does big sis Haley (Sarah Hyland) think of that? “I don’t think Alex really cares what her big sister thinks. I think once she becomes top dog in her school, it’s going to be, ‘Hey, I’m as cool as me now so you can’t say anything. I can still make fun of you, but you can’t make fun of me.’ ”

And exclusive, context-free scoop! In an upcoming episode, Phil has this line: “Sorry, I burnt my ladyfingers.” In other Pritchett news, who would watch a documentary series about Cameron as an overbearing stage parent? We’ll get a taste of that program when Lily lands a small role in a commercial that pays homage to a classic B movie.

Julie Bowen: Jane Lynch Has Emmy Locked Up

E!Online caught up with the Modern Family funnylady at Breakthrough of the Year Awards in Hollywood (where Sofia Vergara got her well-deserved award!)  to chat about her Emmy nom, the hopefully-we’ll-see gay kiss on MF, and her plans not to have more kids…ever!

Why haven’t we seen gay couple Cameron and Mitchell kiss on Modern Family?
Here’s a secret: Jesse Tyler Ferguson has terrible breath. Eric Stonestreet just doesn’t want to get that close [laughs].

But really…
I have no idea. It never occurred to me that they kiss or haven’t kissed. I’m sure they will. We’ve got really smart, really creative writers and they don’t want to write a scene that’s just about a kiss. I’m sure they’ll find a way to make it very smart and clever.

Cast Prepares Emmy Fashion and Acceptance Speeches

Boasting an impressive 14 Emmy nominations, the cast of “Modern Family” has a lot of planning to do for the August 29 awards show. What red carpet styles can be expected? Are the actors planning on winging their acceptance speeches or are they already hard at work with a pen and paper? ET got the latest from the actors at a table read of a new episode of this groundbreaking show.

Ty Burrell has his outfit picked out for the biggest television event of the year. “I am wearing nothing but a beer hat,” he teased. Costar Julie Bowen is relaxed about the issue and is waiting for a gown to come her way, saying, “I’m sure the dress will appear by magic.

She’s taking the same approach to her acceptance speech should her name be called up to the podium. “Absolutely, under no circumstances would there be any planning,” she said with resolve. Ty is torn between the two options–to write or not to write. “First of all, I don’t win things, so I wouldn’t prepare a speech, but then my worst nightmare in the world is that the one in a gazillion lottery ball lands and somehow I were to win, I’d be up there looking like a horse’s patootie,” he worried.

Eric Stonestreet came from another school of thought, saying, “If I was fortunate enough to get that privilege to win, I would want to definitely have my thoughts together and thank the people that are important to me… My parents are at the top of that list.

Exotic beauty Sofia Vergara exuded calmness about the Emmys, admitting, “I just prefer to go to the party and have fun and wear a fantastic dress.Jesse Tyler Ferguson hopes to make a statement on the red carpet by also wearing “a fantastic dress…Whatever Sofia doesn’t like, they’re sending over to my room.

Ed O’Neil expressed appreciation for the nominations, comparing, “It’s a different kind of response than I was used to from ‘Married with Children’ because even though that show was a hit and it ran so many years, it didn’t have the same kind of cache and also sort of peer recognition.

Julie did have jitters about having table read in front of a crowd of hundreds of fans. “I am catatonic on Valium right now…I’m a mess. I’m going to drink the minute we get off camera,” she joked.
