Ty Burrell is favored to win Supporting Comedy Actor for ‘Modern Family’

Stonestreet was able to rise above the fray last year because his “Fizbo” performance was especially memorable. But this year, he doesn’t have a lot of screen time in his submission, “Mother’s Day,” in which he is upset that he’s considered the mother in his relationship with Mitchell (Ferguson). But “Mother’s Day” also gives O’Neill a chance to display some emotional range in a storyline where he gets weepy remembering his deceased mother.
O’Neill’s submission, “The Kiss,” is full of slapstick, but it also includes a heartfelt moment toward the end when he reconciles with his son Mitchell over not showing him enough affection when he was a child. However, “The Kiss” also gives Burrell some strong material as he also vies for Jay’s affection, while Ferguson and Stonestreet bicker about Mitchell’s aversion to PDA.
Ferguson submitted “Halloween,” an episode full of physical comedy in which Mitchell is shocked to discover he’s the only person to come to work in costume
on Halloween. Mitchell hastily throws on his business suit over his Spider-Man costume, and after struggling to change his clothes unnoticed he ends up embarrassing himself in front of his co-workers.
But “Halloween” is also a strong showcase for Burrell, who panics over the security of his own marriage after the neighbors split up. In Burrell’s own submission, “Good Cop, Bad Dog,” he switches roles with his disciplinarian wife Claire (Julie Bowen) and forces his daughters to clean their bathroom. Phil takes the task a little too far – duct taping the girls’ computers shut and denying them food – and has a funny moment when he leaps on the girls’ car as they try to get away.
Ultimately Phil remains sympathetic because he realizes being the “bad cop” isn’t in his DNA. Elsewhere in the episode, Mitchell struggles to decide whether to attend a Lady Gaga concert by himself
or tend to Cam, who is sick in bed. And in the third storyline, Jay has to bluntly reject a business proposal by an entrepreneur Gloria (Sofia Vergara) has brought home, but the old softy ends up adopting the entrepreneur’s dog.

Rico Rodriguez: I’m Nothing Like Manny on ‘Modern Family’

Rico Rodriguez, the hilarious 12-year old actor who plays Manny Delgado on ‘Modern Family,’ says he’s really nothing like the precocious character he plays on TV.

“The one thing that’s similar about us is that we’re both uncles,” he says. “I have five nieces and one nephew on the way. People always say I’m too young to be an uncle, and I’m like wait? There’s an age-limit to be an uncle?”

Rico’s real-life, “big, happy family” does include an uncle who’s “pretty much Phil Dunfy,” and an aunt who’s just like Clair. “She’s the boss,” he laughs. “And he’s the one goofing around and cracking us up.”

How much has the success of Modern Family and your Emmy win changed your life?
I don’t have the time to do things that I used to be able to do. I know what I’m doing for the most part every day. I don’t have the free time, which is very welcome. I love having a job obviously. But other than that, my life’s pretty much the same. After the Emmy, people asked me if I felt any different, and I said, “You know, I was still gassy the next day.” Nothing really physically changed for me. [Laughs]

Julie Bowen Dishes

We thought Modern Family was a wholesome show! Well, we were apparently wrong, and somebody better speed-dial the Parents Television Council, because there is a “basically naked” man running around the set! And he’s a guest star you know…

Here’s what Modern mama Julie Bowen just revealed about both of these saucy happenings…plus, could there be a new baby coming to the Modern Family family?!

First, about that naked man. According to Julie, “James Marsden [is coming up]. He’s like basically naked.” Do tell! “He’s with the gay gentlemen.” Wait, are Cam, Mitchell and X-Man James Marsden going to have a threesome? “I’m not saying that,” laughs Julie. “I’m not saying that. I’m just saying that he’s with the gay gentlemen. He’s naked and he happens to be in a storyline with the gay gentlemen. Whatever else you want to take from that is up to you.”

We take from that that Marsden will be taking the part of the “Matthew McConaughey-esque” slacker guy who moves into Cameron and Mitchell’s building and joins them for some sexy Jacuzzi time. (We shouldn’t give away the twist of this plotline, but we LOL’d very hard at the reveal. If the show lives up to the script, it might be one of the funniest Modern Family eps ever.)

As for that new addition to the family, it might be happening on the show, but it will not be happening in Julie B.’s personal life. When we asked if Jay and Gloria or Cam and Mitchell might be adding additional children to their families, Julie told us, “I bet they do! I know it’s not in any current drafts or anything or any current idea lines that they’re shooting, but I bet in a couple years if we’re lucky enough to go that far, please dear god, that they both get more kids.”

Mama Bowen, on the other hand, is quite satisfied with the size and composition of her real-life brood. She says, “I have three children 3 [years old] and under. I am done…We have three boys—everyone always asks me if we’re going to try for the girl, and I’m most definitely not going to try for the girl. It’s all right. I like my boys.”

Speaking to the New York Post, Ferguson explained that Celia Weston will appear as the mother of Cameron (Eric Stonestreet). “As we’ve discovered, Mitchell has some issues with PDA while Cam is obviously quite affectionate,” he said. “Well, that had to come from somewhere. His mum makes Cam look like Mitchell – that’s how affectionate she is. We’re talking full mouth open kisses here.”

Ferguson also revealed details of James Marsden’s role on the show, saying: “It’s a really fun part. He plays one of our next-door neighbours who we find in our hot tub, mistakenly assuming it’s for the whole building. But when he stands up from the hot tub to leave, we decide he can stay.”

However, Ferguson explained that the show tries to choose the best actors for roles instead of picking the most well-known people. “We’re trying to tone down the guest stars in season two, but it was great that so many actors supported us in season one, doing these chestnuts of roles,” he said. “But I think our show succeeds the most when we focus on the family.”

Luke Schools Gloria, and Manny Turns 13

Rico Rodriguez and Nolan Gould took some time out from attending the Megamind premiere in Hollywood last week to tease some upcoming episodes of ABC’s Modern Family. Look for Gould’s Luke Dunphy to school his step-grandma and Rodriguez’ Manny Delgado to become immature — fast. First up: Luke’s role as an accidental teacher. “Jay (Ed O’Neill) teaches Manny how to ride a bike and Gloria (Sofia Vergara) decides she wants to learn to but it goes horribly between her and Jay,” Rodriguez tells EW exclusively. “She needs a more motherly type of person so Luke is her guy!

Luke is going to teach Gloria how to ride a bike!” adds Gould. “It is pretty cool. Jay tried but it doesn’t work because he is a bad teacher and gets too frustrated. So she goes over to my house looking for my dad to teach her but he is busy and can’t do it. I happen to be at the house and my play date cancels so I convince Gloria to let me teach her. He teaches in a very strange way. He’s got a technique where he forces her to learn with a water gun. I also use it on my sister Haley (Sarah Hyland). I’m trying to teach her how to do her homework.”

In another episode, Rodriguez says his character celebrates his 13th birthday by “trying to shove my entire childhood into one day.” “Manny was born an old man so he realizes that he never really did the normal kid stuff so he tries to do everything he was supposed to do in a couple of hours,” Rodriguez tells EW. “For example…making a prank call. He has never done that before and he doesn’t do it well.”

What’s next for Mitchell and Cameron? E!Online caught up with Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet this weekend at L.A.’s London Hotel, where they helped PFLAG honor Ryan Murphy and The Kids Are All Right director Lisa Cholodenko…

Are you guys happy that the gay kiss is behind you?
JTF: I’m glad it’s out there, [and] now we’re getting the, “Was it enough?” question, but that’s fine. We were prepared for it.

Like, Was the kiss big enough?
JTF: Yeah. We’re very happy with the episode. We’re very proud of it. It was told in the way Modern Family should tell it. It was very integral to the story. We’re really pleased with it.

What are you going to do when there’s another campaign like…
JTF: Like, “Let Mitch and Cameron tongue”?
ES: I said there’s going to be a campaign to let Lily talk. Let’s let Lily talk because we’ve been denying her the opportunity. [Laughs]
JTF: The show’s in very good hands. The fans, we love to hear their comments but we got it! We got it under control. They can rest at ease. We’ve got the show under control.
ES: We got their back.

Eric, you told us you were going to send your Emmy to your parents if you won.
ES: I’m going to give it to them at Christmas when I go home for the holidays. They know they’re getting it. I know they’ll get a big kick out of having it and showing it to their friends and just seeing everyday that their sacrifices paid off. It’s in my house now. My friends are coming over and getting pictures.
